Dear Friends of Temple Shalom,

I simply could not be more proud of the staff, students, volunteers and families of Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning.  I am so thankful for the support of the staff and volunteers of Temple Shalom Synagogue this month, as every month!

I would like to thank the Board of Temple Shalom for extending for another year a "free membership in Temple Shalom" for new families who register their children in Irma Penn Religious School.  Please do share this news with family and friends with children who would benefit from our rich, rewarding program.

Our Sunday School, Judaic Studies, is filled with enthusiastic young people.  I've been told that the school is experiencing near 100% attendance, even with inclement weather and out-of-towners.  That speaks volumes about how much the children and their families value the experience.  Thank you Jennifer Lane and Maeve Boardman for your work with these young people!

Every parent that I ask about our Wednesday Hebrew Program has positive feedback. (Paraphrased) "My daughter can read Hebrew after two classes after years of limited success."  "My children are enthusiastic to go -- which says a lot after a full day of school.  Thank you Eileen Curtis and Gaby Saitman for all of your work with these young people!

Lastly, Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning and Temple Shalom threw a wonderful Chanukkah party that was very well attended. Festivities included the children singing, led by Cantor Len Udow and Jennifer Lane; storytelling by Rabbi Karen Soria; dreidel making with Mandy Yakubovich; latke making with Ruth Livingston, as well as candle making, good conversation, and food.  Thank you to Jennifer Lane and Eileen Curtis for all you did to organize this day. And we also couldn’t have done it without the cheerful help of our volunteers. It was the perfect way to celebrate Chanukkah with our community and new friends.

Thank you for all that you do.

Be well,

Marc Schaeffer

Irma Penn Religious School is bustling these days with all sorts of activities during Sunday school and Wednesday Hebrew school. An exciting new development is our post-bnai mitzvah classes. Rabbi Karen Soria has started meeting with students to discuss issues important to teens: human rights, Jewish values, ethics, ideas about suffering, Israel, God, and food. The first meeting got off to a lovely start with some pizza and good conversation. As Rabbi Karen says, "These are the years--adolescence--when our minds really grapple with deeper issues. What a shame if a Jewish perspective isn’t part of that. We could also take the ‘discussion’ to the practical level with a social action component and activity." Our post bnai-students are also planning a service sometime in February. If you are a family with a post-bnai teenager, please feel free to join us! Our next meeting is Sunday, November 8 at 12:30.

Sunday religious school is off to an enjoyable start.  Morah Jen reports that students have learned about the High Holidays, and have had the opportunity to create together a sukkah and edible sukkot treats. Cantor Len has enhanced the students learning of the welcoming of Shabbat.  We have begun exploring the first book of the Torah and will be creating arks using a variety of artistic mediums. Hebrew school on Wednesdays with Morah Eileen is also off to a busy start with new language activities.  She says, “Hebrew classes are well under way with a current enrollment of 6-7students.  Our program consists of learning to read, write and speak Hebrew and is theme based.  We have been focusing on learning our colours and numbers in Hebrew and will soon begin to learn the names of body parts.  We spend time partner reading in Hebrew and are learning to read and chant prayers from the siddur.  We are having lots of fun together.”

As always, if you have questions or would like information on how to register for any of the children's programs, please email our Chair Marc Schaeffer at

Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning is excited to be at the start of a new school year!

Wednesday Hebrew classes are running from 4:30 to 6:30 starting September 16 and Sunday Judaic Studies classes (formerly known as "Sunday School") are from 10:30 AM to 12:30 starting September 27th.  These two dates will also serve as an Open House & Registration Day so please feel free to come in and meet the teachers and members of our School Board.  We are pleased to be welcoming back Eileen Curtis as our Hebrew School teacher on Wednesday and Jennifer Lane as our Sunday School teacher.

The Sunday School will be comprised of three tiers:  Prayer, Holidays & Customs and Bible Studies.  One exciting goal will be preparing students to confidently lead one of our Shabbat services in the Spring (see below).

Wednesday’s Hebrew School class will be using an immersion approach to grow students’ Hebrew skills from the Aleph Bet to describing themselves and their communities. Students will also learn to read more confidently from the siddur.
