Spring has sprung and as things heat up outside, so do things wind down for Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning’s rich and varied school year! This month IPSJL had a lovely Passover Seder and are currently preparing for our last Junior Congregation to be held with Rabbi Tepper on May 10th at starting at 6:30 PM. Come one come all!
I would like to devote some space in this monthly report to thank the Gruber Family Foundation fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. On March 21st, 2018 IPSJL was granted money to buy a multimedia communications package that included a large screen TV and a device that robustly connects iPADs and other devices to the television in such a way that the teacher can control the interaction of the devices and the TV. Teachers can “flip” educational videos to the TV for students to watch. Students can collaborate on a project and have their progress reflected on the screen and many other applications. The application IPSJL has used most successfully is telecommunications. For example, Rabbi Bill Tepper is able to video chat from afar on a large screen.
Even more excitingly, our teachers, Morah Eileen Curtis in partnership with Morah Jennifer and Morah Sofia, has been able to arrange for a cultural exchange between our students and young people in Beth Jacob Talmud Torah in Regina. They exchanged letters and Purim gifts (mishloach manot) before engaging in a video chat. All young people in both provinces were SO excited about this project. We are hoping to someday plan a Shabbaton between our two communities.
Once again, Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning is very thankful to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba for this opportunity to better connect our prairie community to Jewish individuals and communities abroad.
Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning’s 2018-2019 school year is drawing to a close. Our final classes are Sunday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 8. We will be registering for 2019-2020 soon so please feel free to contact us to register or for more information starting today!
