President’s Message Nov/Dec 2019

The High Holy days have ended and the services were uplifting, musical and educational. Thank you to all who arranged, participated and attended the services. Thank you as well to everyone who contributed to the JCFS food drive and to our Yom Kippur drive. Mazel tov to Rabbi Allan for his moving Installation service. Now that we are off to a great start, we have many ways in which you can stay connected with our Community. First, we have beautiful services including the annual Peace Service on Nov 8, Friday Night Live on Nov 29, and a Saturday Torah Service on Dec 6. If you love food and cooking, our first “Exploring World Cuisine” Food Series begins on Wed, Nov 6 with Falafel Place Chef and Owner, Ami Hassan. For the kids, come to Kids Tzedakah Socks Party with Gymkyds and Neta Aviv on Sat, Nov 9. Join Rabbi Allan for another Brunch and Learn on Sun, Nov 24.

You will notice some changes of personnel. Cantor Len will be taking a sabbatical from Nov 29 to May 8 and we are thrilled that David Vamos will be filling in for him. David is a Winnipeg-based music educator and performer, who has been an active member of the city’s Jewish arts community for the past 15 years. David holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance) from the University of Manitoba, as well as a Bachelor of Education from OISE/University of Toronto. Since 2012 he has been on faculty at the Gray Academy of Jewish Education, holding the position of music and drama specialist. David has been a member of the Chai Folk Ensemble since 2002 and has served as the group’s artistic director for the past four seasons. His sacred music experience includes performing with the Holy Blossom Temple and Lachan choirs, directing and performing with the Etz Chayim High Holiday choir, and occasional cantorial soloist at Temple Shalom since 2017.

Ruti Maman is retiring at the end of December. We have hired Cynthia Hornstein as our incoming Administrator. She will be shadowing Ruthie for 2 months to learn the ropes. Cynthia worked for Winnipeg School Division until her recent retirement. We know she will be a great asset to our team. Stay tuned for news about a retirement party on January 5th for Ruthie.
