Every month is full for Irma Penn School of Jewish learning and April was no exception! For the second year in row our school celebrated Passover with a “Walk Through The Haggadah” – fun was had by all! Temple Shalom hosted our FIRST Junior Congregation service this month in partnership with Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning. We are pleased and proud to say that 20 children and 20 adults participated. Most of the children sat up on the bimah with Rabbi Bill Tepper leading the service. Maeve Boardman debuted beautifully on the bimah as a pianist. After a brief pizza party & oneg, Morah Jennifer Lane and Morah Eileen Curtis led the children in activities while parents enjoyed Rabbi Tepper’s Shabbat service. It was so beautiful to see so many children on the bimah for the blessings on the bread at the conclusion of the service, and many stayed for the oneg at the end of the evening as well! We look forward to many more Junior Congregations next year!
Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning’s last regular Sunday class was April 29. Next Sunday Hebrew and Judaic studies students & their families will be celebrating the end of an exciting year at Assiniboine Park. June 1st, Rabbi Tepper will be leading a Temple Shalom youth service featuring the central participation of students of Irma Penn School and the Temple Youth Group.
Our next school year starts early with Sunday school starting on the 9th of September and Hebrew school starting on the 12th. Please tell your friends and family about this fantastic opportunity for young people to learn about Judaism and about Hebrew in a small class environment, with caring and experienced teachers for a very reasonable price!
Have a wonderful, safe summer!
Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning has had a full month with a delicious Tu Bishvat celebration with tasty foods to sample and planting of flower and bean seeds in pretty pots. This last Sunday we had a rowdy Purim celebration complete with costumes, bowling, find the ball game, mask making, SLIME creation and a roaming tyrannosaurus rex (Gaby Saitman)! Hamantashen an abridged Megillah reading rounded out the festivities. Fun was had by all! We are very thankful to have had THREE new families join our school in this last month. As always a big thank you goes out to our teachers Eileen Curtis, Jennifer Lane and Arielle Goldman Smith, our education assistants Maeve Boardman and Gaby Saitman and to our fabulous families.
Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning participated in this year’s latke potluck with a charming reading of a Chanukah play and some songs. It was lovely to see so many families with young children at the Potluck and subsequent Shabbat service.
Sunday, December 17, we hosted a fun Chanukah party for our students, their friends and their families. Rabbi Tepper read a story and Cantor Len led participants in song. Gabrielle Doll led an art workshop in which participants made beautiful paintings of trees. Special thanks to Jennifer Lane, Sofia Gotfrid and Eileen Curtis for organizing everything for this event.
Irma Penn School wishes Morah Sofia well as she goes on maternity leave. We are very thankful to Arielle Goldman Smith for taking on the teaching of Kita Alef on Sunday.
Please note that classes start back Sunday, January 7 and Wednesday January 10.
As always, please feel free to direct any questions, comments and concerns to me. Enjoy the rest of Winter Break, stay warm and have a happy calendrical New Year!
Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning will be putting on a brief & entertaining Chanukah skit before we kick off our potluck celebration!
The Temple Youth Group (formerly known as Post B’nai Mitzvah Group) is excited to be sending three youth to the Fall Kallah of NFTY Northern.
In case you did not know, our Sunday School Kita Alef teacher, Morah Sofia is very and joyously pregnant! She will be starting her maternity leave in January (if all things go according to plan). Mazel Tov to Morah Sofia Gotfrid and her family!
Wednesday Hebrew Class has had a robust start! Please know it is never too late to register your children or grandchildren. (We are happy to pro-rate fees!)
I am pleased to note that Gaby will be the educational assistant (EA) on Wednesday until January when his sister, Adi, will be taking over that role. Maeve continues to be our devoted EA on Sunday.
As always a big thank you to our teachers, EAs, families, students, Rabbi Tepper and Cantor Len as well as our board members for their tireless work! Thank you for all that you do!
It is incredible to believe that Summer 2017 has come and nearly gone! As my daughter Hannah recently said, “I wish we had more boring days so the summer would go by more slowly.”
We are excited to be starting new Sunday school classes on Jewish life and Hebrew school classes on Wednesday after school.
We are also pleased to announce that for the first time in decades Temple Shalom and Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning were represented at NFTY’s Summer camp in the USA by the Saitman family. We hope to see more participation by the Post-Bnai Mitzvah group (Temple Youth Group) in the coming year for subsequent NFTY events.
Please always feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns! Be well,
Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning
Irma Penn School of Jewish learning has had a wonderful month! Instead of our traditional Pre-Passover Seder, Eileen Curtis designed & executed an innovative and exciting “Walk through the Haggadah”. Our young people went from station to station engaging in activities to teach them about Passover through all of their senses. They baked matzah from scratch, built the pyramids with boxes and experienced the frustration of Pharaoh Gaby tearing them down. Morah Eileen & Morah Sophia along with Maeve and volunteer parents helped to make this a wonderful experience for all of our learners! A big thank you to Eileen Curtis for conceiving such a unique and innovative program!
PJ Shabbat service was very well attended on April 21, as we had 19 children and 20 adults in attendance! Our teachers prepared our learners with the story “The Mountain Jews and the Mirror” by Ruchama King Feuerman. Children read the story aloud in turns while our learners acted it out for attendees. Cantor Udow and Rabbi Tepper helped to make this a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat. Certainly there will be a THIRD ANNUAL PJ Shabbat service next year! Special thanks to Florencia Katz for helping to organize and publicize this event!
We are preparing to take registrations for 2017-2018. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns any time!
